FAQ: Common Questions about Custom Wigs

Q: How much does a custom wig cost in Manhattan?

A: In Manhattan, most custom human hair wigs typically range from $2,000 to $6,000+, depending on factors such as hair quality, length, density, and cap construction. The price is higher for hand-tied wigs, which are considered the most natural-looking and lightweight option. During your consultation, you’ll receive a personalized written quote that outlines all the details of your custom design.

Q: How long does it take to make a wig?

A: If the wig is already in stock, delivery typically takes 2–4 business days from our warehouse. Customizing a stock wig—such as adjusting the color, adding a perm, or making minor alterations—usually requires about 1 week. For a fully custom wig, where every element (base, length, color, and texture) is made to order, the process generally takes 12–15 weeks from start to finish.

Q: Does insurance cover custom wigs (cranial prosthesis) in New York?

A: In New York, some health insurance plans will reimburse the cost of a custom wig when prescribed by a doctor as a “cranial prosthesis.” To qualify, you’ll need a doctor’s prescription, a diagnosis code, and an itemized receipt.

As of 2025, under a new New York State law on medical prosthesis (Bill A2683), insurance companies are now required to provide at least $750 in coverage toward a cranial prosthesis.

Coverage can still vary by insurer and plan, so it’s best to confirm with your carrier whether they cover the following codes: A9282 (synthetic hair) or L8499 (human hair). At our salon, we’ll provide all the necessary paperwork to support your reimbursement claim.

Q: What cap type looks most natural and is comfortable for NYC humidity?

A: For the most natural look and comfort in New York’s humidity, hand-tied wig construction is the top choice. This method creates a realistic appearance while remaining lightweight and breathable. A lace-front cap offers a natural-looking hairline and extra ventilation, making it especially comfortable in summer heat.

For added realism and scalp comfort, hand-tied monofilament or lace tops allow for natural-looking parting and are gentle on sensitive skin. Choosing a wig with lighter density, baby hairs along the hairline, and well-ventilated knotting will also enhance breathability and create the most natural effect.

Q: Do I need an appointment for a custom wig fitting in Manhattan, and what happens?

A: Yes, appointments are required for a custom wig fitting in Manhattan. Your complimentary one-hour consultation takes place in a private setting, where you can try on an exact sample of the wig. During this session, we’ll review fit, style, budget, length, hair type, lifestyle needs, and your hair goals, as well as match color and texture.

Expect the consultation to last 45–60 minutes. With every purchase, we include the initial cut and style, a complete wig care kit, and a complimentary lesson on how to wash and style your wig at home.
