FAQ: Common Questions about Custom Wigs

Q: How much does a custom wig cost in Manhattan?

A: Most custom human hair wigs run about $1,000–$4,000+ in NYC, depending on hair quality, length, density, and cap construction. High-end European hair and hand-tied work push the price up. Synthetic or hybrid options can be a few hundred dollars less. A consultation usually includes a written quote.

Q: How long does it take to make a wig?

A: If the wig is in stock, you can often take it home the same day; customizing a stock piece usually takes 3–6 weeks. A fully custom wig—where every detail (base, length, color, and texture) is made to order—typically takes about 12–15 weeks from start to finish.

Q: Does insurance cover custom wigs (cranial prosthesis) in New York?

A: Some health plans reimburse with a doctor’s prescription (use “cranial prosthesis”), diagnosis code, and itemized receipt. Coverage varies by insurer and plan; call your carrier first. At our salon, we provide the paperwork you’ll need for reimbursement.

Q: What cap type looks most natural and is comfortable for NYC humidity?

A: Lace-front (or full-lace) caps create a realistic hairline and feel light and breathable in summer heat. Monofilament tops add realistic parting and are gentle on sensitive scalps. Ask for lighter density at the hairline and good ventilation for subway-and-street wear.

Q: Do I need an appointment for a custom wig fitting in Manhattan, and what happens?

A: Yes—book ahead. A typical fitting covers measurements, lifestyle and hair-goal chat, color/texture matching, and trying bases; expect 45–60 minutes in a private room. After that, the piece is cut and styled to you, with a pickup fitting for final tweaks.
